The Maternity service based at Leighton Hospital in Crewe has been shortlisted for a top national award.
The Unit, managed by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT), will compete against hospitals from Hampshire and Basildon for the Mothercare Maternity Service of the Year award.
The award is part of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Annual Midwifery Awards which reward, celebrate and share outstanding achievement in midwifery across the UK.
The Maternity Service of the Year Award aims to recognise excellence and innovation in the provision of maternity care and in the organisation of the service. It gives recognition to services which have demonstrated an exemplary forward-looking and innovative approach to the provision of maternity and how women are offered a number of different birthing choices. Being shortlisted also demonstrates a commitment to improved recruitment and retention of maternity staff as well as ensuring that they are appropriately supported and valued.
Speaking about being named on the shortlist, Pam Cornwall, Head of Midwifery at MCHFT, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been shortlisted for such a prestigious award. We have an amazing team of committed professionals here and this shortlisting is down to the care and devotion that they provide to each and every one of our pregnant ladies and their families.
“The Maternity service here has developed greatly over the past few years and this nomination is recognition that we are up there with the best services in the country.
“The Unit at Leighton Hospital can provide care for all women, from low-risk births in our Maternity-Led Unit through to those who may require more attention in our traditional Labour Ward. We are also able to provide women with home births, all supported by our fantastic team of dedicated and highly qualified Midwives.”
The RCM Award shortlisting is the latest accolade received by the service, following a positive rating in the CQC National Patient Survey as well as being named as one of the safest units in the country by CNST and achieving Stage Two of UNICEF’s Baby Friendly initiative.
The Maternity Unit at Leighton Hospital has undergone a thorough refurbishment in recent years. The hospital now boasts a purpose-built Midwifery-Led Unit attached to the main Labour Ward, with birthing pools, ambient mood lighting, en-suite facilities and a private courtyard accessible from each room. A new high-dependency area was also created for women who require more intensive specialised care during labour, further increasing the safety of their care.

The winners of the RCM awards will be announced at the Annual Midwifery Awards on Tuesday, March 3, 2015.
The MCHFT Maternity Service has been shortlisted for the Mothercare Award of Midwifery Service of the Year. The other nominees for this award are Basildon Maternity (Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and Hampshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
