Wheelchair Service

Our service

The Wheelchair Service is part of Allied Health Services, delivering services to patients situated within East Cheshire and South and Vale Royal localities.

It provides a comprehensive service for people of all ages with long-term mobility problems and associated postural needs in accordance with statutory requirements.

The service provides initial and on-going assessment and prescription of manual and powered wheelchairs, specialised seating and pressure cushions for wheelchairs, modifications and accessories.

 

Our departmental objectives 

The main aim of the service is to promote independence and enhance quality of life through wheelchair provision. The service's objectives are to:

  • provide a locally-based service to people who have long term mobility requirements (over 6 months) or permanent disability;

  • provide for clinical needs while considering the holistic needs of the user, including social, educational, lifestyle and family / carer requirements;

  • provide necessary information on the safe use, adjustment and limitations of the equipment;

  • provide an effective and responsive equipment maintenance function via an external contract; and

  • be responsive to the users changing needs and lifestyles.

How do I refer/access the service?

A referral form can be completed by a GP, consultant or therapist. All referrals are reviewed and assessed against a set of criteria for issue. 

 

Who will I see?

The service is delivered by a multi-professional team of clinical and administrative staff:

  • Wheelchair therapists

  • Therapy assistants / assistant practitioners

  • Consultant in rehabilitation

  • Administrative and clerical staff

  • An external contractor, Ross Care Centre, delivers an authorised repairer service.

FAQs

Do I qualify for a wheelchair?

All referrals to the service for a wheelchair must have a permanent physical disability/impairment or medical condition that will last for 6 months and which seriously impairs their ability to walk.

I have been referred to the wheelchair service; will I automatically get a wheelchair?

All referrals to the service will be considered. However referral to the service and / or assessment does not automatically lead to the supply of a wheelchair. The final decision regarding the provision of a wheelchair lies with the clinician.

How do I contact the wheel chair service?

When is the wheelchair centre open?

The centre is open Monday – Friday excluding Bank Holidays from 8.00am – 4.30pm. If you wish to return equipment please contact the service prior to arriving at the centre as staff are often away on home visits or in the clinic.

An answerphone message can be left outside of normal working hours and at times when staff are away from the office during working hours.

I have been assessed and need a wheelchair. What is the choice of wheelchairs?

The wheelchairs provided are normally selected from a specific range designed to fulfill the users identified clinical needs.

I am able to walk indoors but would like a wheelchair for outside?

The wheelchair service is unable to provide outdoor social use wheelchairs but we can provide details of other services that may be able to provide a wheelchair i.e. Red Cross Loans, Shopmobility.

How do I get my wheelchair repaired?

If your wheelchair has been issued by the wheelchair service please contact Ross Care Directly on 0845 230 1559

What do I do if I need transport to get to my assessment?

If you require and qualify for hospital transport, please ask the person who has referred you to arrange this. 

When do I qualify for a home visit?

If you are unable to travel to the wheelchair centre either independently or on hospital transport your appointment can be at home. Some appointments will be made at your home if you require a specific wheelchair or if your home environment needs to be assessed.

How long will I have to wait for an appointment?

This depends on what type of appointment or clinic you are waiting for.  We aim to try and see people as soon as possible. Up-to-date waiting times can be obtained by contacting your wheelchair centre.

How long will I have to wait for my wheelchair to be delivered after my assessment?

This will depend on the type of wheelchair being ordered and lead times from manufacturers and any modifications that need to be done once the wheelchair is in stock. An approximate lead time may be able to be obtained, by the wheelchair assessment centre, from the manufactures at the point of ordering however this can be subject to change and is outside the control of the wheelchair service.

What is the voucher system? How do I qualify for a voucher?

What facilities are there at the wheelchair assessment centre?

The centre is wheelchair accessible. Disabled toilet facilities are available. Disabled parking bays are available outside the main hospital entrance leading to reception.

Who will be present at my assessment?

This will vary depending on the type of assessment required. (See also: 'Who will I see?')

What do I do if my wheelchair is no longer suitable for my needs?

Please contact the wheelchair centre that provided your wheelchair, who can arrange a reassessment. If you have moved area we will request your previous address details and the name of the wheelchair centre that supplied your wheelchair so that we can have your records transferred.

What happens if I can’t attend my appointment?

Please contact the centre ASAP so that your appointment can be offered to someone else. Unfilled appointment slots lead to an increase in waiting times for other patients.

What do I do if I wish to complain about the wheelchair service?

I am in a residential or nursing home, do I qualify for a wheelchair?

If you fulfill the criteria you will be assessed for a wheelchair however we are unable to provide homes with manual transit wheelchairs or pool wheelchairs.

Can I have an electrically-powered wheelchair?

To be assessed for an electrically powered wheelchair, you will need to fulfill the eligibility criteria (including a satisfactory GP medical and eye sight requirements ), have a suitable indoor environment and be able to demonstrate the safe independent control of a powered chair then you can be considered for an electrically-powered wheelchair.
