Gynaecological Oncology

Introduction

Our gynaecology oncology service aims to diagnose and treat cancers and pre-cancers of the uterus (womb), ovaries, cervix and vulva.

We offer a wide range of services:

  • Rapid Access Clinic
  • Gynaecological Oncology Clinic
  • Post-menopausal Bleeding Clinic
  • Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery
  • Dedicated team - Oncology Lead Consultant Murray Luckas and Clinical Nurse Specialist Sally Petith

All patients with a suspected or confirmed cancer are discussed at a weekly multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meeting, which includes Surgeons, Radiologists, Pathologists, Medical, Clinical Oncologists and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS).

We work in conjunction with our colleagues at the tertiary centre, The Christie Hospital, to ensure women receive prompt access to appropriate specialist treatment whether that is surgical treatment or other medical treatment. If radiotherapy or chemotherapy is needed as part of the treatment this is provided at the Christie Hospital.

Treatment

Diagnostic and therapeutic surgical treatment is carried out locally following the specialist MDT review. This generally includes patients with early stage endometrial (Womb) cancer and early stage cervical cancer. Where appropriate, our surgeons perform minimally invasive keyhole surgery to reduce length of stay and enhance recovery.
