Frequently Asked Questions

When are you open?

The library is open and staffed between 8.30am – 5.00pm, Monday – Friday (excluding bank holidays). However, you can swipe in and out with your NHS ID card at any time although you won't be able to borrow books or print documents out of hours.

How many items can I borrow and for how long?

You can borrow up to 15 books.  Most books are 3 week loans.  A few are 1 week loans or reference but this is clearly marked on the front of the book.

Can I return books when you are closed?

There is a book return box in the corridor as you walk into Postgrad where you can drop books off when we are closed.

Do you charge fines?

We do charge fines although you will get a reminder just before your books are due back. We charge10p per book, per day for 3-week loans and 50p per book,  per day for 1-week loans.

How do  I renew my books?

You can renew books up to 6 times. After that you will need to bring them into the library so we can check you have still got them. You won't be able to renew your books if someone else wants them or if you owe £10 or more in fines. You can renew your books by popping into the library, phoning us or online.  If you work for the NHS we can set you up with a password so you can renew your books online.

How can you support journal clubs?

Looking for an article to use?  The library will provide a range of suggested papers on any topic and will get hold of and circulate articles to your group for free.  By doing this, it means we can deal with any copyright issues which can arise.  We can also offer training in evaluating research articles. Call Ext 3172 to see how we can help.

Do you have a binding service?

Yes. We have got a self-service spiral binder and you can buy everything you need to bind your work for £1. We'll show you what to do if you haven't bound anything before. We also sell assignment wallets for 10p each.

Can you get hold of an article for me?

If you can't get an article through your university or Athens password we can order it for you as an inter-library request.  This is free for NHS staff although University of Chester students will be charged £2 per article.

Where’s the nearest toilet?

During office hours the nearest available toilets are either next door in the Post Graduate Medical Centre or upstairs in the University of Chester Faculty of Health & Social Care. For disabled toilet access during the day please ask library staff.  Outside office hours you can use the toilet in the library - there is a door to it by the water fountain in the journals area.

If you have any other questions please ask us - we'll be happy to help!
