Available courses

Adopting a critical eye for research

Every day we are bombarded with information on all sides.  The question is how much of it should be believed?  Do the authors have a hidden agenda which biases the information?  Is the methodology of the research you are reading robust and will it stand up to scrutiny?  Understanding the different characteristics of research methodologies and having a few simple questions to hold in your head can help you judge the value of information and make it easier to understand which information best informs your decisions.

Finding evidence for healthcare

This course will show you how to search the NICE Evidence Search Databases for evidence, how to get better search results from Google Scholar and introduce you to the TRIP (Turning Research Into Practice) database. Finding and accessing journal articles

Using Google or Google Scholar to find articles on medical topics can be a bit hit and miss and may not always get you the most recent, relevant or highest quality information. This course will cover using some of the NHS's own databases to search for journal articles and how you can use your NHS Athens password to access and download articles. You can book a course in person or download the slides and work through them yourself here.

Finding and writing high-quality patient information

This course will show you where to find high-quality patient information online and give you a few plain-English tips for writing high-qaulity information yourself.

Finding information using PubMed and the Cochrane Library

This course will show you some advanced techniques for searching PubMed and show you how to search the Cochrane Library for systematic reviews and clinical trials. You can book a course in person or download the slides and work through them yourself here.

An introduction to reflective writing

This course will give a brief introduction to reflective writing. What it is, why it’s a good thing to do, some of the underlying principles and some tips for getting started. Ideal for anyone needing to do reflective writing as part of their re-validation
