Rainbow Flag Flying at Leighton Hospital
Rainbow Flag Flying at Leighton Hospital

Monday, May 21, 2012

On Thursday, May 17, Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) took part in the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia by flying the Rainbow Flag at Leighton Hospital in Crewe.

By flying the Flag, the Trust visibly showed its support for taking positive action to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans individuals and raising awareness of the impact that homophobia, biphobia and transphobia has on these communities.

As part of the Trust’s commitment to providing equally appropriate and accessible care to all members of the local community, it has adopted two overarching equality objectives which it is currently working towards achieving. The first is to work with others to improve the health of the local community whilst reducing areas of health inequality, and the second is to work with employees and trade unions to ensure high levels of staff satisfaction amongst all staff.

Jon Workman, Head of Equality, Diversity and Human Rights at MCHFT, said: “By flying the Rainbow Flag, the Trust has helped to raise awareness of the discrimination which can take place in our society and has shown its support for ending the unfair treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.

“MCHFT recognises that health inequalities exist in our local community, and we are committed to working with others to address those inequalities. We are also working with our staff and trade unions to address any inequalities or low satisfaction levels which may occur within our workforce.

“It is the policy of the Trust that no one will be discriminated against on grounds of age, disability, gender re-assignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.”

Additional Information

Flying the Flag

The Lesbian & Gay Foundation (LGF) encouraged organisations, individuals and groups to visibly mark International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia on 17 May. ‘Flying the Flag’ is an initiative that provides an opportunity to do so by flying a Rainbow Flag or marking the day by taking positive action to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans individuals and communities. It not only raises awareness of the impact that homophobia, biphobia and transphobia continues to have on lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGB&T) people and communities, but shows recognition of the positive contribution of LGB&T people locally. Further information is available online at www.lgf.org.uk/flag.
