If the referral is accepted, the child will be offered an appointment in the most appropriate setting:
  • Community clinics / Children’s Centres: Children with a wide range of speech and/or language difficulties. Most children are seen within this setting.
  • Mainstream Schools, Special Schools and Resource Bases: For children with significant speech, language and communication needs identified in their Education and Health Care Plan or are in receipt of additional Top-Up funding and whose needs are best met with the speech and language therapist working in partnership with educational staff in the child’s educational setting.
  • Patient’s homes / preschool settings: For children with complex needs, it may be most appropriate for assessment and treatment to take place in these venues. Such as children with additional sensory and/or motor problems and/or significant cognitive difficulties and some children with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
