What does the Urgent Treatment Centre do?

The Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) provides healthcare for patients who present to the Emergency Department with primary care symptoms. The service is co-located within the Emergency Department at Leighton Hospital. The UTC has a range of healthcare professionals including General Practitioners, Advanced Clinical Practioners, Streaming Nurses and Technicians.

People who attend a UTC are usually:

  • able to move around
  • in need of same day treatment

The UTC is equipped to investigate and diagnose most of the common illnesses that people may attend Emergency Departments (A&E) for. People may need some investigative tests to be carried out while they are in the UTC.

The UTC offers appointments that can be booked through NHS 111 (telephone and online). The streaming team support the UTC with the assessment of walk-in patients and can signpost the patient to the most appropriate care setting.

What are the opening hours?

The service is open between 09:00 – 21:00, 7 days a week including bank holidays.

Who can attend?

UTC accepts complex primary care presentations and supports admission avoidance with access to diagnostic investigations (near patient blood testing such as haemoglobin, glucose, d-dimer and electrolytes), CT scan and ECG). The UTC treats minor illnesses and can be routinely accessed without an appointment.
