After your procedure you will be transferred from the endoscopy procedure room into the recovery area.

In recovery, a nurse will check your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen levels and breathing (observations).  You will be asked if you have any pain or discomfort and be offered pain relief if required.

The time spent in recovery is different for every patient and will depend on the procedure you have had.  When you are comfortable, fully awake and your observations are normal, the nurse will get you up and out of bed.  You will then be taken to the discharge area.

If you are able to eat and drink following your procedure, you will be offered refreshments.

When you are ready to leave, the person collecting you will be asked to come and get you.

The discharging nurse will discuss the outcome of your procedure and give you individual discharge advice.  If necessary, the Endoscopist may also give you more information about what they found during your procedure.

You will get a copy of your endoscopy report and written discharge advice as you leave hospital.  A copy of your endoscopy report will also be sent to your GP.

If you have any problems or symptoms after your procedure, please contact the Endoscopy Unit, which is open from 8am-6pm, Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays. Tel 01270 277980.

You can also call the NHS Helpline number 111 for advice at any time.  If you are still unwell and need further advice or think you require immediate medical attention when the Endoscopy Unit is closed, we recommend you attend our Leighton Hospital Emergency Department.  You will need to explain what procedure you have had and what your symptoms are and please take your Endoscopy report with you.
