Open Letter Regarding the Thirlwall Inquiry - 10 September 2024
Following the convictions of former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby, the Department of Health and Social Care announced a statutory inquiry into the events at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is called The Thirlwall Inquiry and begins in September 2024.
We acknowledge the impact that this might have, and to encourage you to speak with your maternity or neonatal team if you have any questions or concerns. Alternatively you can contact our PALS team.
These appalling crimes were the actions of a single individual, which shocked and sickened all who work in the NHS. This case is, however, a stark reminder of how important it is that the NHS listens carefully to the concerns of patients, families and staff.
We know that having a baby that is being cared for at hospital can be very worrying for parents and recognise that building trust is a key part of that partnership. We know that when we work with parents, together we can provide the best care for babies.
We want everyone to feel safe and confident to speak up if they have any worries at all about their baby’s care.
