I applied for the Student Nursing Associate (SNA) apprenticeship course in 2018 to progress from my role as HCA. Being on an apprenticeship helped as I got paid a wage while on the course, and I was able to do bank shifts to top up my wage. It provided a good work life balance as placements were very flexible.

I worked as a Nursing Associate on the care of the elderly ward, the SNA course gave me the qualifications I needed to top up and become a registered nurse and I started my top up to become a Registered Nurse in April 2021. Without the SNA apprenticeship I would have never been able to afford become a nurse. I have recently accepted a band 6 sister post and would not be where I am now without training as a SNA.

Prior to pursuing the SNA opportunity, I dedicated five fulfilling years as a healthcare assistant at Mid Cheshire Hospital. During this time, I gained invaluable experience and developed a deep passion for making a positive impact within the healthcare setting. However, I felt compelled to take my career to the next level, aspiring to enact even greater change and contribute more profoundly to our workplace.

This desire for professional growth and the opportunity to broaden my impact led me to apply for the SNA role. The prospect of further education and training excited me, as did the chance to deepen my understanding and expertise in the field. Throughout the course, I found myself immersed in a supportive environment, both from the university and the PEF team within the Trust. Their assistance and guidance were instrumental in navigating the intricacies of clinical training, ensuring that I had ample opportunities for learning and development.

One of the highlights of the SNA course was the opportunity for diverse clinical placements, which provided me with invaluable exposure to various fields of nursing, including children's and mental health. These experiences not only expanded my skill set but also reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a career dedicated to holistic patient care.

Moreover, I am grateful for the work-life balance that the course facilitated. Having my annual leave allowance from the Trust allowed me to manage my personal and professional commitments effectively, enhancing my overall experience and well-being.

As I stand today, I am proud to contribute to the healthcare community as part of the CCICP, working with the district nurses in Sandbach (SMASH). Looking ahead, I am eager to continue my journey and further my career, with aspirations to pursue a nursing top-up program in the near future.
